ALUMNI RELATIONS NEWSVoice Your Opinion In The Alumni SurveyThe Office of Alumni Relations sent an e-mail to alumni on Tuesday inviting their participation in a Web-based survey on alumni services. All alumni are invited to take part! The goal of the survey is to find out more about what services and programs alumni would like to see the Alumni Relations team offer. If you have not completed the survey yet, but are interested in doing so, please click here. The survey is open until June 20. For all alumni who participate and share their names and contact information (which is otherwise optional), they will be eligible to receive a special offer on men’s and women’s basketball tickets and to participate in a raffle for James Taylor concert tickets, an Apple IPod Mini, and DePaul University sweatshirts. If you have any questions about the survey, please call the alumni office at (800) 437-1898. Recent Alumni EventsThe Office of Alumni Relations sponsored three cultural events for alumni in May and early June. On May 25, close to 100 DePaul alumni kicked off the Memorial Day weekend with a variety of red and white wines at Chicago's Star Bar! Five tasting stations were positioned throughout the venue, with a spectacular finale in the outdoor terrace. Representatives from Tortoise Creek and The Lucky Country were on hand to answer questions about their varieties, which were showcased throughout the evening. After the reception, many alumni moved next door to listen to jazz at Pops for Champagne, where the cover fee was waived for alumni. The DePaul Symphony Orchestra celebrated their 29th year of performing in Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center on May 18. This year's Joseph and Marie Grant Annual Spring Concert was a wonderful success, with close to 1,800 alumni and guests in attendance. The evening was a beautiful tribute to the DePaul School of Music, where it was apparent that its students continue to experience the highest quality of musical instruction and engagement the country can offer! At the end of each academic year, graduating students from The Theatre School (TTS) participate in the "Showcase in NYC," which is attended by dozens of TTS alumni. It gives new alumni a chance to make some valuable connections. This year the alumni office hosted an all-alumni reception and theater outing on June 1. NYC-area alumni enjoyed meeting fellow alumni and conversing with College of Commerce dean Art Kraft and The Theater School dean John Culbert at Cafe Iguana. Following the reception, many of the participants walked to Studio 54 to attend a production of "A Streetcar Named Desire" featuring alumnus John C. Reilly (BFA '87). Movie Pass Special for AlumniDePaul University is offering its alumni special discounts on tickets for movies shown at any Loews Cineplex theater. Alumni are allowed a maximum of four movie tickets priced at $5.50 each every two weeks (while supplies last). You must pick up the tickets at either the Loop campus (11th floor of the DePaul Center at 1 E. Jackson Blvd.) or the Lincoln Park Campus (2nd floor of the Student Center). Alumni can call the Student Center at (312) 362-5011 to check the status of available movie passes and for more information. ALUMNI RELATIONS EVENTS
UNIVERSITY NEWSCommencement Speakers AnnouncedDePaul University will feature an impressive lineup of speakers for its 2005 commencement ceremonies, the 107th exercises in the school's history, which will be held June 11 and 12. Some of the notable honorary degree recipients will include:
Barnes & Noble Opens in Loop CampusOn June 1, Barnes & Noble College Booksellers, Inc. opened an "academic superstore" in the DePaul Center at 1 E. Jackson Blvd. The two-level, 36,000-square-foot facility is three times larger than the previous bookstore in the building. It serves both DePaul's students and South Loop residents and business people. The store includes a Starbucks Café, a general reading area and reference department and a marketplace on the first floor. Textbooks, school supplies and DePaul insignia clothing and gifts will be sold on the lower level. In building this new academic superstore—one of just 10 such Barnes & Nobles in the nation—DePaul is pioneering a new way to build bridges and blur the boundaries between campus and community. Welcome Center Under Construction on Loop CampusIn July, DePaul will begin construction of a new student welcome center on the first floor of the DePaul Center. It will be named in honor of Joan M. Wish, the late wife of DePaul friend, trustee and benefactor, Ernie Wish. The welcome center, scheduled to be completed in September, will occupy approximately 2,000 square feet of space. St. Vincent Scholarships Now Available to StudentsDePaul has started a new program to award scholarships of up to $2,500 to students who have demonstrated a commitment to community service through active participation in a parish-based Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization dedicated to community service. Any student who has been accepted to or is enrolled in a DePaul undergraduate or graduate degree program is eligible. The application deadline is July 15. To obtain a scholarship application packet, or for more information, contact Jane McGrath, assistant vice president for Enrollment Management at (312) 362-5765 or jmcgrath@depaul.edu.
