Alumni to Host Students During Inauguration Week
Four DePaul journalism students and Professor Mike Conklin will travel to Washington, D.C., next week to gain firsthand experience in covering president-elect Barack Obama's inauguration. More than 30 alumni and friends of DePaul have offered their help to the students as part of this experiential learning project. Alumni are housing the students and providing interviews, transportation, event tickets, tours and more. The students plan to write material for a special insert in DePaul's student newspaper, blog and post video coverage from the event. For more details about this project, read the alumni news article.

Benefit of the Month: Discount at Ray Meyer Fitness Center
If "exercise more" is one of your new year's resolutions, and you live in the Chicagoland area, consider joining the Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center. Located on the Lincoln Park Campus, the fitness center features a four-court gymnasium, racquetball courts, swimming pool, track, and strength and conditioning areas. As a DePaul graduate, you and your spouse are eligible for discounted membership rates. To receive the discount, you must present an alumni ID or a copy of your diploma or transcripts. Visit the Campus Recreation Web site for more information.

Tune in to Nationwide Game Watch
The Nationwide Alumni Game Watch is upon us. DePaul graduates across the country will gather in front of their television screens on Jan. 24 to cheer the Blue Demons men's basketball team to victory against the Marquette Golden Eagles. This year game watches will be held in 16 locations nationwide. Attend the celebration near you or catch the game at home on ESPN2 and enjoy an afternoon of DePaul basketball.

Career Week 2009 Great for Job Seekers and Career Changers
Whether you're in transition or looking for a change, Career Week 2009 has something to offer. Designed for DePaul alumni, adult students and graduate students, this week-long event, Feb. 16-22, includes career-related workshops, seminars, networking opportunities and more at several of DePaul's campuses. Two Career Week events will feature DePaul alumni: author Theresa Banks (CDM '87) will discuss her book "Surviving a Layoff" during an Alumni Author Hour, and professional career coach Joan McMahon (LAS '90) will speak at the Closing Keynote Brunch. (See video of Coach Joan.)

Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions is the presenting sponsor of Career Week 2009. For a complete schedule of events and to register online, visit the Career Week Web site.

Volunteer Opportunity: Reunion Class Committees
DePaul alumni express their commitment to Vincentian service through many volunteer opportunities on and off campus. Reunion volunteering is one way to give back to your alma mater. Alumni in reunion year—1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999 and 2004—are invited to volunteer for reunion class committees. The class committees help make Reunion Weekend a success by encouraging fellow graduates to attend Reunion Weekend festivities, Oct. 16-18, 2009. If you're interested, call (800) 437-1898 or e-mail reunion@depaul.edu.

New Science Building Opens for Business
The Monsignor Andrew J. McGowan Science Building, the centerpiece of DePaul's Campaign for Excellence in Science, opened its doors to students on Jan. 5. The new facility includes 23 research labs, eight dedicated teaching labs, a multipurpose room that converts from a classroom to a lab, and five large tiered classrooms. In addition to providing space for the chemistry and environmental sciences departments, the building features a mural of St. Vincent de Paul. Read more about the new building in Campaign News.

DePaul Museum Displays Artwork From the Americas
Two exhibits opening Jan. 15 at the DePaul Art Museum will feature artwork from Central and South America. "Reverence Renewed: Colonial Andean Art" showcases the distinct painting traditions—particularly the Catholic imagery—created following the sixteenth-century Spanish invasion of South America. "Realism and Magic: Latin American Photography" features the work of Mexican, Guatemalan, Brazilian, Peruvian and Caribbean artists. Visit the museum's Web site for more details.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events on Campus
DePaul will commemorate the 80th birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 19 with a series of events. The DePaul Cultural Center's Annual MLK Jr. Day Prayer Breakfast, held from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in Room 120 of the Student Center, 2250 N. Sheffield Ave, will kick off the day’s events. Robert P. Moses, educator and pivotal organizer of the civil rights movement, will serve as the keynote speaker. Alumni can register online for the breakfast. For more information about Moses, read the complete news article.

Other King Day programs include an address by Terry Smith, a law professor at Fordham University, followed by a luncheon and panel discussion. On Jan. 29, the School for New Learning will hold a King-related panel discussion, "Hope and Change: What Exactly Does it Mean?" For complete details about these events, visit the DePaul Newsroom.
