DePaul Alumnae Win Top Teaching Awards
Three DePaul School of Education alumnae are winners of prestigious awards from the Golden Apple Foundation, which recognizes and develops outstanding teachers in the Chicago area, especially for schools of need. Monica Gil (EDU ’01, MED ’04) and Samina Khan (MED ’04) won Golden Apple awards, and Virginia Kogen (EDU ’00) won a Teachers of Distinction Award.

A total of 10 award recipients, selected from more than 800 applicants, were honored at a celebration at the Hyatt Regency Chicago on Sept. 6. Each Golden Apple winner receives a tuition-free spring-term sabbatical at Northwestern University, a personal computer from IBM, a $3,000 cash prize and membership in the Golden Apple Academy of Educators. For more details, visit the DePaul Alumni Web site.

DePaul's Service Learning Programs Top-ranked Again
U.S.News & World Report has ranked DePaul University’s community-based service learning curriculum among the nation's top 25 service learning programs. The program is cited in the 2009 edition of the magazine’s "America's Best Colleges" guide for college-bound students. This is the sixth consecutive year that U.S.News has included DePaul’s service learning program among the nation's top 25. DePaul is the only university in Illinois honored in this category.

Combining classroom learning and hands-on service to underserved communities, courses offered through the program enable students to gain experiential knowledge while earning credits toward their degree. For more details, go to DePaul Alumni Web site.

DePaul Coach Helps Bring U.S. Olympic Glory
DePaul softball assistant coach Cat Osterman clinched victory for the U.S. Olympic softball team in Beijing when she pitched a no-hitter during a game with Australia on Aug. 13. The U.S. softball team went on to win silver. Osterman’s outstanding performance in Beijing marks the second time she has represented the United States at the Olympics. She won a gold medal at the Athens games in 2004. For photos and more details, visit Osterman’s blog.

Returning Military Can Enroll on the Spot at DePaul
DePaul recently announced its support for a new GI Bill that allows for expedited admission processes and other services to facilitate returning military veterans' entry into higher education.

As a result, veterans who qualify can enroll at DePaul on the spot. The accelerated admission program is in "recognition of [veterans'] sacrifice and service to our country," says the Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M., president of DePaul. For more details, visit the DePaul University Newsroom.

Affordable Housing Study Details How Gentrification Affects Chicago’s Pilsen Neighborhood
DePaul geography professors Euan Hague and Winifred Curran have published the results of a two-year housing survey in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood that reveals how gentrification happens both on the ground and through public policy.

An example of the practical and topical research going on at DePaul, “Contested Chicago: Pilsen and Gentrification” is a 53-page booklet that also narrates how local community activists have tried to preserve the neighborhood’s affordable and architecturally significant housing. For more details, go to the DePaul University Newsroom.
