Alumnus Endows First College of Communication Scholarship
A $50,000 donation from longtime Chicago journalist Joe Cappo (LAS ’57) and his wife, Mary Anne, will fund the first endowed scholarship for DePaul University’s College of Communication. Beginning this fall, the Joe and Mary Anne Cappo Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a College of Communication junior or senior who is the first in his or her family to attend college. The scholarship will help fulfill DePaul’s commitment to first-generation college students.
An adjunct faculty member in the college and a member of the school’s Dean’s Advisory Council, Cappo was a first-generation college student and received a scholarship to help complete his studies at DePaul. For more details, visit the DePaul University Newsroom.
Blue Demon Track and Field Star Attends Olympic Event
DePaul men’s track and field team member Gabe Harris was one of 30 students chosen by the U.S. Olympic Committee to attend the 2008 Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere (F.L.A.M.E.) program. The leadership event was hosted at the U.S. Olympic Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., June 4-7.
Harris, an education major with a minor in sports management, was selected by the U.S. Olympic Committee for his achievements in athletics, academics and community service. The Blue Demon junior is a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and a six-time BIG EAST Championship qualifier. As a member of the DePaul Captains’ Council, Harris has helped plan and implement numerous community service projects.
University Museum Hosts Domestic Surveillance Exhibition
Chicago-based installation artist Gerda Meyer Bernstein’s “Domestic Surveillance and Other Recent Work” opened at the DePaul University Museum on June 27. The exhibition will run through Aug. 29.
The German-born artist and Holocaust survivor uses non-traditional materials to address thorny social and political issues. Her works in the exhibition explore the difficult question of how individuals should respond to violence, disaster and injustice. ‘Domestic Surveillance,’ one of the works on display, examines the surveillance methods that the U.S. government uses in its anti-terror efforts. For more information about this exhibition, visit the museum’s Web site.
DePaul Graduates First Deaf Woman to Earn Computer Science Doctorate
Karen Alkoby became the first deaf woman in the United States to receive a doctorate in computer science when she graduated from DePaul’s College of Computing and Digital Media June 15. The emotional day was the culmination of an eight-year journey for Alkoby, who had worked tirelessly to explore and research methods of using technology to improve ways for the deaf community to communicate.
“It’s hard to believe that I’m actually done,” said Alkoby via an interpreter. “Now I really feel like I’m flying out of the safety net. But DePaul prepared me well, so I’m ready for the next chapter.” For more details, visit the DePaul Newsroom.

Alumni Relations is looking for volunteers to assist with two initiatives starting this fall. In partnership with DePaul’s experiential First-Year Program, we are looking for alumni who work in the Loop or Lincoln Park area to host a freshman class field trip. Alumni Relations and the University Ministry also are looking for alumni who work at nonprofit organizations to assist with a student service project. If you are interested in either of these or other exciting new volunteer opportunities, contact Colleen Soto, assistant director, Alumni Relations at (312) 362-5593 or csoto4@depaul.edu.
Join a Social Media Group
Alumni are joining DePaul’s three-month old social media networks in record numbers to find and share the latest news, event announcements, photos and other beneficial information. By the second week of July, the DePaul Alumni Association page on Facebook, a popular social network, registered a total of 1,080 fans. The alumni group on LinkedIn, a professionals’ online network, attracted 683 members in the same period. And 11 alumni have established a Blue Demon presence on Flickr, a web-based photo-sharing application. Join any of these groups to get connected with your fellow alumni and alma mater.
