DePaul Joins Chicago Affordable Housing Coalition The Real Estate Center at DePaul University has joined the Preservation Compact, a coalition of Chicago-area businesses, governmental agencies and nonprofit organizations with the goal |

of saving affordable rental housing for low- and middle-income families. A $3.5 million gift from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation will support the center's involvement. The Real Estate Center will participate in two initiatives-creating a rental housing data clearinghouse to monitor rental housing losses and managing an interagency council to coordinate governmental agencies involved with the preservation effort. The Preservation Compact, a package of six key initiatives created by the Urban Land Institute (ULI), a coalition partner, seeks to preserve and improve 75,000 existing rental units in Cook County that otherwise are at risk of being lost by 2020. The comprehensive project is on the leading edge of a movement in cities across the nation to stop affordable housing declines that weaken urban workforces and economies. For more information about the Preservation Compact announcement, visit ULI's Preservation Compact Web site. Law Professor Awarded Prestigious Hague Prize for International Law DePaul College of Law Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni was awarded the prestigious Hague Prize for International Law. Recognized globally for his work to advance human rights through law, Bassiouni was selected for the award because of his outstanding contributions to the study and promotion of international criminal law and specifically for his work to create the International Criminal Court, which is based in The Hague. Bassiouni is the second recipient of The Hague Prize, which was established in 2002 and is awarded at least every two years. Bassiouni, who is the founder and president emeritus of DePaul's International Human Rights Law Institute, has been a member of the College of Law faculty for more than 40 years. Two DePaul Basketball Players Selected in NBA Draft For the second time in six years, two DePaul men's basketball players have been selected in the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft. Wilson Chandler, who concluded his sophomore season with the Blue Demons in 2006-07, was taken by the New York Knicks as the 23rd pick of the first round. Sammy Mejia, who finished his four-year DePaul career in 2006-07, went in the second round (57th pick) to the Detroit Pistons. Chandler and Mejia are the 45th and 46th DePaul players respectively to be drafted by the NBA. Chandler became the ninth to be taken in the first round. In the last seven years, five DePaul players have been drafted and five of the last seven Blue Demons picked have been first-round selections. Learn more on the DePaul Blue Demons Athletics Web site.
