DePaul Celebrates the Groundbreaking for New Science Building More than 300 alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students celebrated the groundbreaking for DePaul's new Lincoln Park Campus science facility, the Monsignor Andrew J. McGowan Science Building, June 6. The building is a core component of DePaul's $20 million Campaign for Excellence in Science, designed to prepare exceptionally educated professionals to meet the needs of Illinois' scientific and medical communities.The building was named following a $2 million gift from the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund. Monsignor McGowan is the brother of the late William G. McGowan, the founder of MCI Communications and the namesake for DePaul's first science building, which lies north of the new building. The State of Illinois, through its Capital Development Board, contributed $9 million to the campaign. |
Alumni Relations News New Detroit Alumni Chapter The DePaul Alumni Association is pleased to announce the launch of an official DePaul Alumni Chapter in Detroit. DePaul has almost 2,000 alumni in Michigan with many alumni residing and working in the Detroit area. Detroit joins existing New York City, Arizona, Southern California and Washington, D.C. Alumni Chapters and the newly-formed Denver Chapter. Save the date for two Detroit-area events: On Thursday, July 26, Michigan alumni and their guests are invited to meet fellow Blue Demons and begin shaping the Detroit Chapter. A formal alumni reception and chapter kick-off, featuring the president of DePaul, the Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M., will be held on Thursday, Sept. 13. DePaul Softball Team Ends Season in the World Series Congratulations to the DePaul softball team for reaching the Women's College World Series. The 14th-seeded Blue Demons earned a trip to the World Series at the end of May by sweeping the NCAA Super Regional series against 3rd-seed Oklahoma.The storybook 2007 softball season came to a close when the team lost to top seed Arizona in the double-elimination World Series on June 2. The Blue Demons finish the season with 47 wins and 13 losses including 6 wins and 2 losses in the 2007 NCAA Championship. The softball team has reached the world series four times since 1999.
