Construction Begins on New Science Building in June

The groundbreaking ceremony for DePaul's new science building, future home of the departments of chemistry and environmental science, will be held June 6 on the Lincoln Park campus. The four-story, $37.5 million facility will include research labs, dedicated teaching labs and large, tiered classrooms. Rooftop greenhouses will be used for teaching and research.
As the centerpiece of the university's Campaign for Excellence in Science, the building is a crucial component of DePaul's plan to provide cutting-edge science education to future generations of students. Funds raised through the $20 million campaign will help DePaul build the state-of-the-art science facility, endow new science scholarships and develop new academic programs.

CTI Names New Dean

The School of Computer Science, Telecommunications and Information Systems (CTI) named David Miller as its new dean. Miller, who joined DePaul as an assistant professor in 1981, has served as CTI's interim dean since 2005. The previous dean, Helmut Epp, now serves as DePaul's provost.

Miller's future plans for CTI include continuing the school's tradition of providing innovative courses and degree programs in information technology and digital cinema, expanding specialized distance learning offerings and adding programs for students overseas. CTI is one of the most innovative and wide-ranging information technology and digital cinema schools in the country. Learn more at CTI's Web site.

Marketing Professor's Research Among the Most Cited Worldwide

A 2001 study coauthored by DePaul Assistant Professor of Marketing Albert M. Muñiz Jr. has topped the academic charts this spring as the most cited research paper in the field of business and economics worldwide, according to Thomson Scientific. The Philadelphia-based firm tracks research trends in 11,000 academic journals and issues a bi-monthly list of the most cited papers in 22 disciplines.

Muñiz and coauthor Thomas C. O'Guinn, a marketing professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business, coined the phrase "brand community" in a study of the same name to describe consumers that form communities around their devotion to a particular brand. The groundbreaking article explored nongeographically bound communities formed among admirers of certain brands and found that these communities operate in a manner similar to traditional, face-to-face communities.
