DePaul Recognized for Dedication to Community Engagement The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the nation's top higher education research and advocacy organization, has awarded DePaul the foundation's highest rating for community engagement. DePaul is one of only 62 universities in the nation and the only one in Illinois to earn the rating – the new Community Engagement classification – for its efforts to deepen students' civic learning and address community needs. |

Community engagement is at the core of the DePaul experience. In fact, U.S. News & World Report has ranked the university’s formal community-based service-learning program among the nation’s top 25 for four years running. Three-Year Program to Explore Corporations' Role in Reducing Poverty DePaul University's College of Commerce is launching an ambitious three-year program this month designed to promote business initiatives that reduce poverty and expand access to health care among underserved people in Chicago as well as in developing nations. Sponsored by the college's Institute for Business & Professional Ethics (IBPE) and supported by a $45,000 grant from Abbott Laboratories, DePaul's initiative will begin Feb. 15 with the first of a series of lectures featuring distinguished scholars discussing how the for-profit sector can address poverty. According to Laura Hartman, DePaul professor of business ethics and IBPE's director of research, IBPE continues the work of St. Vincent de Paul. "Just as St. Vincent brought together unexpected companions – the wealthy ladies of Paris and the poor – IBPE brings together social change and corporations," says Hartman. "Corporations have long contributed to society through their charitable arms, but not through their business divisions. IBPE's initiatives show corporations that partnering with the community for social change aligns with corporations' long-term strategic interest to be profitable." SNL Launches the Center for Advancement of the Education of Adults The School for New Learning's newly launched Center for the Advancement of the Education of Adults was created "to serve as a catalyst for change and improved practice in the education of adults," according to its mission statement. And it intends to do just that by becoming a hub for research and – through programs, publications and consultancies – a resource for adult educators throughout Chicago, the United States and the world. The center's broad approach advances two goals of the university's VISION twenty12 strategic plan: enriching academic quality and modeling diversity. The Center for the Advancement of the Education of Adults was created with the support of a $100,000 founding grant from alumna Trish Parson (SNL '78). Other donors to the center include alumnus and trustee Bertram Scott (SNL '80) and his wife, Liz Fender, who pledged $150,000 to support a distinguished lecturer series.
